Most schools have two picture days each year—fall and spring. But they're not quite the same. Here's what makes each one unique and how to prepare for both.
Fall Picture Day
Purpose
Fall photos are typically the "official" school photos of the year. They're used for:
- Yearbook photos
- Student ID cards
- School records and databases
- Class composites
Timing
Usually within the first few weeks of school, often in September or early October.
The Pros
- Fresh start energy — Kids are excited about the new school year
- New clothes — Many families shop for back-to-school outfits
- Consistent lighting — Early fall weather is usually predictable
The Challenges
- New haircuts are still fresh — Sometimes too fresh
- Wardrobe transitions — It might be hot but you want a "fall" look
- Adjustment period — Some kids are still settling into their new class
Tips for Fall
- Plan the outfit in advance, but consider the weather
- Get haircuts 1-2 weeks before, not the week of
- If your child is nervous about the new school, acknowledge their feelings while building excitement for picture day
Spring Picture Day
Purpose
Spring photos capture how much your child has grown. They're often used for:
- Updated photos for parents to purchase
- End-of-year memories
- Class photos with the whole group
- Graduation photos (for Pre-K, Kindergarten, etc.)
Timing
Usually in March, April, or May, depending on the school calendar.
The Pros
- Visible growth — Compare to fall photos and see how much they've changed!
- More confident — Kids are comfortable with their class and school
- Personality shines — They know the routine and feel relaxed
The Challenges
- Wardrobe fatigue — The "nice" clothes might be worn out or outgrown
- Spring weather — Allergies, sunburns, wind-messed hair
- End-of-year energy — Kids may be tired or distracted
Tips for Spring
- Double-check that last year's outfit still fits
- Watch for sunburns from spring break or outdoor activities
- Keep allergy symptoms in check—red eyes and runny noses don't photograph well
Should You Buy Both?
Some families buy both fall and spring photos. Others choose one. Here's how to decide:
Buy Both If:
- Your child changes a lot year to year (especially younger kids)
- You like documenting growth throughout the year
- Grandparents and relatives expect photos twice a year
- You missed fall due to absence
Choose One If:
- Your budget is tight
- Your child looks similar in both seasons
- You have limited wall/album space
- You prefer higher-quality prints of one session
Our Approach
