Spring retakes are one of the most underrated opportunities of the school year. Whether your child was absent on the original picture day, had an unfortunate hair situation, or just was not feeling their best, retake day gives you a second chance at a photo you will love for years.
When Do Spring Retakes Happen?
Most Austin-area schools schedule retakes in late March through May, typically four to six weeks after the original picture day. Your school will send home a retake notice or include the date in the school newsletter. If you have not received one yet, check with your school's front office — they coordinate directly with the photography team.
Who Should Get Retakes?
Retakes are not just for missed days. Consider scheduling a retake if:
- Your child was absent on the original picture day — retakes ensure they are included in the yearbook and class composite
- The original photo did not turn out well — maybe your child blinked, had a stain on their shirt, or just was not having their best day
- You want a different outfit or hairstyle — retake day is a fresh start
- Your child started at a new school after the original picture day
There is no penalty for retaking. The new photo simply replaces the original in the yearbook and class composite.
How to Prepare for a Better Result
The advantage of a retake is that you know what to expect. Use these tips to make the most of the second chance:
Clothing
Choose a solid-colored top in a color that flatters your child's skin tone. Deep blues, soft greens, and warm burgundies photograph well against the grey backdrop used in most school photography. Avoid busy patterns, logos, and neon colors.
Hair and Grooming
Keep it simple and consistent with how your child normally looks. A drastic change from their everyday appearance makes the photo feel less authentic. If your child has longer hair, make sure it is out of their face — clips and headbands work well.
Mindset
The biggest difference between a good school photo and a great one is how comfortable the child feels. Talk to your child about retake day in a positive way — it is not a correction, it is a bonus opportunity. Let them know the photographer will guide them and that the whole process takes less than a minute.
What Happens to the Original Photos?
If you already ordered prints from the original session, most photography companies allow you to reorder with the retake image. Check with your school about the reorder process — some studios provide a new proof sheet, while others handle it through the online ordering portal.
Spring Retakes and Yearbook Deadlines
Timing matters. Spring retakes are often the last opportunity to update your child's yearbook photo before the book goes to print. If your child's photo is important to you — and it should be, these are the memories — do not skip retake day.
If you are unsure whether your school has scheduled retakes, reach out to the front office. And if your school does not currently offer professional photography services and is looking for a photographer who makes picture day easy for everyone, we would love to talk.
