Photographer for Children with Special Needs — Austin, TX

We're looking for a patient, flexible photographer with real experience working with children with autism, sensory sensitivities, and special needs. This isn't a standard picture-day role — it's one of the most meaningful positions on our team.

What You'll Do

Therapeutic & Special Education Schools

Photograph students in therapeutic day schools, special education classrooms, early intervention programs, and developmental preschools. You'll work with students across the full spectrum — from mild sensory sensitivities to complex behavioral and communication needs.

Sensory-Friendly Setup & Approach

Adapt your lighting, equipment, and energy to minimize sensory overwhelm. This may mean reducing flash intensity, moving to a quieter corner of the building, or simply waiting patiently on the floor until a child is ready. You make the environment work for the child, not the reverse.

Collaboration with School Staff

Work closely with teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, and aides before and during picture day. Staff know their students — you listen, learn, and adapt. Together you create a positive experience for every child, including those who have never had a successful photo session before.

Non-Verbal Communication & Reading Cues

Many students you photograph will communicate differently — through behavior, body language, AAC devices, or not at all. Your ability to read those cues, respect them, and adjust your approach accordingly is the core skill this role requires.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience working with children with autism, Down syndrome, sensory processing differences, or behavioral support needs
  • Comfort with non-verbal communication and alternative communication styles
  • Patience to spend extended time with a single student without frustration
  • Understanding of sensory sensitivities and how to minimize triggers in a photo setting
  • Ability to read body language and adjust your approach in real time
  • Own camera body and lenses; comfort shooting in varied indoor lighting
  • Previous work in special education, therapeutic programs, ABA therapy, or related fields is a strong plus

Austin School Photography already serves therapeutic schools and special needs programs throughout Central Texas. We have built an approach that prioritizes each student's dignity and comfort above all else. We need a photographer who shares that philosophy.
